Can Medication Cure Morning Sickness?

Many women who are pregnant and dealing with morning sickness are often prescribed medication by their doctor.  If you’ve never taken it before you may wonder if it will cure your morning sickness and what kind of side effects you can expect.  We’ll take a look at how these medications work so that you can get a better idea of what to expect.

Most medications that are prescribed were not originally intended to treat morning sickness.  Some were meant to treat motion sickness and others were designed to help cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.  Since the root cause of morning sickness is not known, both of these types of medications will provide relief for some women.

The main way that these medications work is by blocking certain chemicals that the brain produces.  These chemicals are responsible for negative feelings such as nausea, pain and anxiety.  Once those chemicals are no longer being produced, the body can start to feel “normal” again.

The problem is that there are also some negative side effects due to the blockage of these chemicals.  The biggest side effect is drowsiness which is often remedied with sleep.  Some other women have experienced confusion, fatigue and dry mouth.  If you are concerned about side effects, you’ll have to weigh them against the discomfort of the morning sickness and decide which will be easier for you to cope with.

Although medication cannot cure morning sickness, it can definitely take the edge off the nausea for many women.  However, once the medication wears off, the nausea will return.  It is best to use a combination of medication as well as other natural remedies to try to maintain a consistent pattern of relief until your morning sickness passes.
